Cathedral Chapter

Although St. Mark's has a large and active congregation of regular members, it is more than just a parish church.  As the Cathedral of the Diocese, it is in many ways a "second home" for all Episcopalians in Minnesota - the official "seat" of the Bishop of Minnesota, a host for many diocesan events, and a symbol of the Episcopal Church in the City of Minneapolis and the entire State.

Because of this larger role, St. Mark's governing body is also somewhat different than that of a normal Episcopal church.  That body is officially called "the Chapter," and it includes the Bishop of Minnesota and lay and clergy members elected by the Diocesan Convention or appointed by the Bishop, as well as the Dean of the Cathedral and members elected by the Cathedral congregation from among its members.  The entire Chapter meets quarterly, usually in January, April, July, and September.  Between those meetings, the Dean and the Chapter members who are elected from St. Mark's congregation (officially called "the Executive Committee," but often informally referred to as "the Vestry") meet monthly, except in August, to manage the temporal affairs of the Cathedral.  Meetings of both the Chapter and the Executive Committee normally are held on the third Thursday of the month at 4:30 p.m., and they are open to all members of the Cathedral, unless reasons of confidentiality require an "executive session."

Wanted:  Vestry Nominations

Do you know someone in the congregation who you think would be a good addition to the Executive Committee of the Cathedral Chapter (a/k/a the Vestry)?  Are you interested in serving St. Mark’s in this important position yourself?  If so, now is the time to share your opinion.

The three-year terms of current members David Olson, Siri Hauge Hustad, Louise Simons, Brian Crist, and Lee Brant are expiring, and they along with outgoing senior warden Inez Bergquist will serve as a nominating committee to propose new members for election at the Annual Meeting.  They need your help to recommend the best possible group to continue the tradition of strong vestry leadership.

Nominations must be submitted in writing.  Please think about who should be added to the Cathedral’s leadership team and submit the name or names (you can submit more than one form) for consideration.

Download a Vestry Nomination Form now and send in your nomination.

The deadline for submitting nominations is January 8, 2010.

Thank you.

Wardens

Wardens are vestry members chosen to serve the parish in a special capacity.

Wardens (both junior and senior) can either be elected or appointed, depending on local parish or diocesan canons. At Saint Mark's, the Wardens are chosen by the dean and approved by the members of the parish. They serve as a liaison between the rector and the parish.

The Senior Warden is viewed as the "highest ranking" lay person in the parish.
Inez Bergquist

The Junior Warden becomes Senior Warden after one year.
